FY 2002 DRUG COURT GRANT PROGRAM
Adult Implementation Grant Award
New York
AWARD RECIPIENT:
New York State Unified Court System - Schenectady County
New York, NY
AWARD AMOUNT:
$436,696*
PURPOSE: The Schenectady County Drug Court Program will use grant funds to implement
an adult drug court in an urban, suburban, and rural jurisdiction. The court will serve 115
felony, misdemeanor, and probation-violating nonviolent, substance-abusing offenders annually.
The program will last approximately 12 to 18 months, and it will operate based on a post-adjudication model. The program will provide intensive judicial supervision, sanctions and
incentives, mandatory drug testing, and aftercare services through the use of a 3-phase structure.
The program will help break the cycle of recidivism by drug addicted offenders through
intensive supervised treatment and will enable these community members to become productive
members of society. The court has established relationships with the NYS Unified Court
System, various local substance abuse treatment providers, the Sheriff, City Police Chief,
Department of Social Services, District Attorney, Public Defender, Probation Department, Law,
Order and Justice, Inc.; County Manager, Council of Community Services, Capitol Region
Board of Cooperative Educational Services, and Alliance for Families and Children. The court
will conduct process and outcome evaluations, which will evaluate the court's operations and
impact on the surrounding community. The court will utilize the NYS Universal Treatment
Application, which allows the court to maintain a uniform database throughout the state, while
allowing flexibility to suit the needs of the local court.
